Irvin vs. Ohtani
Last weekend the Oakland A’s lost their first series out of the All-Star break, and they did it in similar fashion to the weeks leading into the break — close games that they could have won, but didn’t quite do enough to earn.
They’ll get a fresh start against a new opponent on Monday, as the Los Angeles Angels come to the Coliseum for a quick two-game set. The A’s have won seven of 10 meetings with the Halos this year, including a series loss in Anaheim, followed by a four-game split and a three-game sweep both in Oakland.
But this time the opening matchup brings a tough task, as superstar Shohei Ohtani is on the mound for the Angels. This is his first pitching appearance since starting the All-Star Game last week. The right-hander has been quality in five of his last seven outings, including most recently against the Red Sox, and he’s also batting second in the lineup where he leads the majors with an absurd 34 homers already.
