AAA Sacramento (36-47)
Sacramento River Cats lost to the El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres) 7-3
Box score
We’re at the point in the MLB season, given how good the Giants have been, that the most important element of AAA games is the performance of players who might be in the Majors soon.
That emphatically includes Evan Longoria, who made his fourth rehab start with the River Cats. Longo was having a brilliant season when he was injured after a collision with Brandon Crawford, and he hasn’t played since June 5 — though he’s still been the team’s fifth-most valuable position player.
Longoria started at third base on Monday and went 3-3 with a home run. The Giants will take a River Cats loss paired with a Longoria who looks ready over the alternative eight days a week, so it was a good day for that alone.

The rest of the offense didn’t do much, mustering just 4 hits (all singles), including a pair from shortstop Mauricio Dubón. They did draw 8 walks on the day though, so that’s a win.
It was another unfortunate start for RHP Tyler Beede, who pitched just 2.2 innings and allowed 2 hits, 6 walks, and 5 earned runs, with only 1 strikeout. While some command issues are still to be expected this close to Tommy John surgery, Beede has now allowed 50 hits and 45 walks in 48.2 innings, with just 50 strikeouts. It pains me to say, but he may be a DFA candidate, though he would seem likely to clear waivers given the struggles.
RHP Tyler Chatwood made his second appearance since the Giants signed him to a Minor League deal and pitched a scoreless inning while allowing a walk.
Center fielder Steven Duggar went 0-4 with a walk and 3 strikeouts in his first game since being optioned.
ACL Orange (15-15)
ACL Giants Orange lost to the Rockies 1-0 (7 innings)
Box score
It was a pretty much non-existent offensive day for the Giants Orange squad, who failed to draw a walk and had just 4 singles. Catcher Adrian Sugastey (19, 2019 J2) went 2-3, which was the only performance that can be constituted as “good.”
But there was a debut of a recent draftee, as left fielder Vaun Brown (23, 2021 10th round) made his pro debut and hit 1-2.
The pitching was much better than the hitting, though it was a group effort, as 4 pitchers combined to allow 7 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run in 6 innings.
ACL Black (17-13)
ACL Giants Black beat the Athletics 12-10 (7 innings)
Box score
The Giants Black game was quite a bit different, with 9 hits and 6 walks leading to 12 runs in just 7 innings. The star of the day was second baseman Ghordy Santos (21, 2016 J2), who had 3 hits, including 2 home runs, and 6 runs batted in. That’s a pretty darned good day at the office, and it raised his excellent OPS to 1.241, albeit in just 21 plate appearances.
Two recent draftees made their pro debuts, with right fielder Jared Dupere (22, 2021 13th round) hitting 1-3 with a double and a walk, and third baseman Irvin Murr III (18, 2021 19th round) going 0-3.
Designated hitter Javeyan Williams (24, 2019 22nd round) drew 2 walks and stole 2 bases.
All 4 pitchers the Giants Black team used got tagged, but none more so than RHP Lisander De La Cruz (19, 2019 J2), who allowed 4 earned runs in 2 innings to raise his ERA to 4.38.
DSL Orange (6-10)
DSL Giants Orange leading the Pirates Gold 2-0 (suspended)
Box score
The Giants Orange and Pirates Gold only made it through the top half of the second inning before their game was suspended. It will be completed on Sept. 2. The Giants did score a pair of runs in their lone inning of offense, thanks in part to a leadoff home run by Ramon Peralta (17, 2020 J2).
RHP Daniel Rondon (18, 2019 J2) pitched 2 no-hit innings, allowing 1 walk and striking out 3.
DSL Black (6-7)
DSL Giants Black losing to the Tigers 3-1 (suspended)
Box score
The Giants Black game was also suspended, and will also be finished on Sept. 2, though they made it through 3 innings.
Left fielder Diego Villegas (17, 2020 J2) knocked in the only run of the game (so far) for the Giants, with a double that raised his OPS to .555. RHP Jorge Martinez (19, 2019 J2) struggled on the mound, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 3 earned runs in 3 innings.
Home runs
AAA Evan Longoria (1)
ACL Ghordy Santos 2 (2)
DSL Ramon Peralta (1)
