Apparently if the Giants lose at home, it’s guaranteed that Alex Wood will get a win the next day. At least it has been lately.
After Sunday’s win against the Rockies to take the series, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted the following:
Giants win 5-2, they’re an ML best 76-42, they’re 11-0 when Alex Wood starts after an SF loss.

That sure is a random bit of information, and people love random bits of information! It prompted the Summer Sunday post game crew to ask whether Alex Wood should be considered a slump-buster. Personally, I don’t feel like you can call one loss a slump, so I would say no on that basis. But it is still an interesting fact!
Wood had been averaging about 4-5 earned runs per game over his last three starts, but his teammates were able to put up the runs needed for wins in those games.
Sunday saw Wood last six and two thirds innings, a much needed relief for the relief staff who have been overly taxed lately (and who, you know, would have loved to see a few of those runs in Saturday’s game where they took a beating with no run support, but I digress.) This allowed for a relatively uneventful final few innings, which was definitely a relief for Giants fans as well.

The Giants welcome the New York Mets to town tonight at 6:45 p.m. PT. The Mets, of course, had a night game in New York last night against the Dodgers, so they will be at a bit of a disadvantage coming in.
