Which Wood will the Giants get?
Hello and happy Sunday. I hope you’re having a very nice weekend.
A quick programming note: I will not be recapping today’s game, as I’m off camping. We shall return to business as usual tomorrow. Also, due to me being gone for the weekend, I wrote this article on Thursday, so here’s hoping that nothing changed with the San Francisco Giants and their rotation or injuries. I sincerely apologize if I’m writing about Alex Wood on a day when Ty Blach is actually starting.
Assuming that is not the case, Alex Wood is making his Giants debut today.
I’ve always been a fan of Wood’s. I find him an enjoyable pitcher to watch, and when he’s on he makes hitters look absolutely foolish. He’s also dealt with a lot of injuries that have not only suppressed his playing time, but also his performance.
From 2016 through 2018, Wood pitched 364.1 innings, with 352 strikeouts, 98 walks, a 3.29 ERA, and a 3.38 FIP. Excellent numbers.
In 2019 and 2020, Wood pitched just 48.1 innings, with 45 strikeouts, 15 walks, a 5.96 ERA, and a 6.02 FIP. Not so excellent numbers.
Which Wood are you anticipating shows up for the Giants this year? Will he be on and off the IL, with performance that makes you not miss him when he’s gone? Or will he be a dangerous weapon to a surprisingly effective rotation?
I vote the latter. Because it’s more fun and you can’t stop me.
