Kevin Durant Reveals His Favorite NBA Finals Series

July 19, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

An extreme closeup of Kevin Durant's face.

At 32 years of age, Kevin Durant has gotten to see dozens of NBA Finals, and has played in a handful of them too. Over the weekend, he revealed which Finals was his favorite.

Taking to Instagram over the weekend, Durant decided to slip into the comments section of a post calling the Bucks-Suns Finals “the best NBA Finals we’ve seen since 2016 (Warriors–Cavaliers).” Interestingly enough, Durant took exception to that statement.

Durant replied, “Warriors-Cavs 2017 (better)” and left it at that. Given how special a place the 2017 Finals must have in Durant’s heart, it’s easy to see why he feels that way.

After losing to LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the 2012 NBA Finals, and several near-misses in the postseason in the four seasons after that, Durant won his first championship ring in his first year with the Golden State Warriors. They beat the defending NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers in five games to win the title.

Durant was voted Finals MVP after averaging 35 points a game.

Kevin Durant may find himself on a bit of an island with that pick though. Many NBA fans still don’t forgive Durant for leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Warriors and create a super-team that won back-to-back titles and reached the Finals three years in a row before Durant left.

And the 2016 Finals also boasts one of the most remarkable comeback stories in American history. The Cavaliers overcame a 3-1 deficit to win their first title, delivering a championship to Cleveland for the first time in generations.

2017 may forever be Kevin Durant’s favorite Finals given what he accomplished that year. But aside from him, the Warriors and the Warriors fanbase, it probably doesn’t crack the top 10 for greatest Finals ever.

Maybe if he wins an NBA Finals with the Brooklyn Nets, his opinion will change.

Do you agree with Kevin Durant’s pick here?
