Kevon Looney to be re-evaluated in two weeks

The Dubs center will be out for a while.

Kevon Looney will miss at least two weeks with an ankle sprain, the Golden State Warriors announced on Wednesday. An MRI confirmed the left ankle sprain, and Looney will be re-evaluated in two weeks, on Feb. 17.

Looney exited Tuesday’s loss to the Boston Celtics after rolling the ankle. The Warriors seemed to immediately know that it wasn’t a minor injury, as Steve Kerr said after the game that he didn’t expect to see Looney for a few games.

Turns out it will be even more than that. The Warriors have a game in two weeks, and even if Looney returned for that one — rather unlikely — he would be missing seven games between now and then.

It’s a big hit to the Dubs, as the sixth-year center had been providing strong minutes, and was part of many of Golden State’s best lineups. On the year, Looney is averaging 3.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game in 14.7 minutes, and shooting 62.3% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the arc. He had recently moved into the starting lineup.

The injury leaves the Dubs without any center on the roster, as James Wiseman (wrist sprain), Marquese Chriss (broken leg), and Alen Smailagić (meniscal tear) are all out as well.

Hopefully Wiseman can return soon, because the Warriors probably don’t want to be without a center for too long. Golden State’s roster is also full, meaning they’d have to waive or trade a player if they wanted to add a center.
