Americans Abroad Weekly: Slonina Rumors, Marsch relegation scrap and Fulhamerica

A major talking point amongst USMNT and El Tri fans, have been the slew of young and talented Mexican-American dual nationals. Rumors have continued to swirl around a pair of young players. Gabriel Slonina could be heading off to England soon, Fulham is back in the premier league and Jesse Marsch is fighting for Leeds’ to stay up.

When a Mexican-American dual national chooses to represent one nation over the other, it’s a nice bragging piece. When promising young goal keeper David Ochoa chose Mexico over the US, it was a nice win for them, until Ricardo Pepi went the other way, choosing the US. Well here we are again, with San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell and his brother Chance, who are in the process of obtaining Mexican citizenship, and are eligible through their maternal grandmother. Though most believe the USA are still favorites to land the Cowell’s, it doesn’t ease any stress knowing they are trying to become Mexican citizens. The dual national battle will be something to keep your eye on as we inch closer to the World Cup, as performance at the world cup might sway these young kids one way or the other.

Slonina Transfer Update

As mentioned last week, Slonina was being courted by the Polish national team, and that’s a Dual national we do not want to lose. However the updates on his front come from Europe as Slonina is being looked at multiple major European clubs, and his decision on his landing spot could be imminent. Slonina might be taking the jump to Europe too early, and I think he very well could be loaned back to the MLS, or a lower level league where he can continue to grow.

Leeds United are caught in a relegation scrap, sitting at 34 points,  just 2 points clear of Everton who have a match in hand. Leeds still have Arsenal, Chelsea, Brighton, Brentford, and Aston Villa still to play, which is a very  difficult run in. It will certainly be a struggle for Leeds to stay up, and here’s to hoping he makes it work. In the Championship, Fulham are heading back to the Premier League, and having fielded plenty of Americans, they earned the nickname “Fulhamerica.” Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream are back in the top flight of English soccer.
