The San Francisco 49ers’ coaching staff was destined to have some turnover once defensive coordinator Robert Saleh signed on as the New York Jets’ head coach. A striking example of just how much change came to their staff was displayed Thursday when the 49ers announced 10 new hires and three title changes among coaches for the 2021 season.
The 10 new hires include a couple that were reported in January. Butch Barry will take over as an assistant offensive line coach. James Bettcher is joining the club as a senior defensive assistant and run game specialist. Darryl Tapp will be an assistant defensive line coach and Cory Undlin is the new defensive pass game specialist and secondary coach. Rich Scangarello is back with the team as their quarterbacks coach – the same role he occupied in 2017 and 2018.

The movement on the coaching staff also made room for some title changes. The most major was DeMeco Ryans and Mike McDaniel both being elevated to coordinator roles from their previous positions as linebackers coach and passing game coordinator, respectively.
On Thursday the team announced Chris Foerster would take over as the offensive line coach after two seasons as a game planning assistant. Bobby Slowik was an offensive assistant the last two seasons after spending two years as a defensive quality control coach, and now he’ll step in as the offensive passing game specialist. Johnny Holland will be back at linebackers coach – the role he originally occupied back in 2017 before moving to run game specialist/outside linebackers the last three years.
