San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has finally unveiled his plan for this weekend’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. It turns out both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance will play in the preseason opener.
Shanahan revealed that Garoppolo will begin Saturday night’s game as the starter, but the veteran quarterback won’t be under center for long.
“Jimmy will start [the first preseason game],” Shanahan told reporters. “Hopefully one series. Then we’ll get Trey in there for the rest of the first half.”
Judging by Shanahan’s comments, Lance will have plenty of time to show what he can do this weekend. That’s important since he’s still competing for the starting job in San Francisco.

So how many snaps will Lance receive on Saturday? According to Shanahan, the third overall pick will receive roughly 30 snaps in his first preseason game.

As you’d expect, the majority of 49ers fans are most excited to see Lance play on Saturday night. They’ve heard plenty of great things about Lance over the past few months. Just last week, Trent Williams called the rookie quarterback a “generational talent” at the quarterback position.
“Trey is an outstanding talent. It’s hard to deny that,” Williams said, via 49ers WebZone. “When you see him throw the ball, when you see him run the ball, you know that’s a generational talent.”
Well, NFL fans will get to see if Lance is truly a “generational talent” this weekend.
