Despite the No. 3 overall selection of Trey Lance, the San Francisco 49ers continue to insist that returning QB1 Jimmy Garoppolo is the teams starter heading into 2021. That being said, the rookie challenger has certainly impressed in Niners training camp.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch has delegated the final decision to Kyle Shanahan, but he likes what he’s seeing from Lance so far.
“That’s up to Kyle. That’s up to our head coach,” Lynch said on the Murph & Mac show, per Niners insider David Bonilla. “He makes the decisions on who’s playing and what not. But I think it’s Jimmy’s right now and Trey’s pushing. I think that’s where it’s at.”
While Garoppolo still has the edge, Lynch outlined how happy he is with the franchise’s decision to trade up in the draft for Lance.
“He’s been awesome. He’s been everything we thought he would be and more,” Lynch said. “He was good from day one when he walked in here in the offseason, and I think a testament to what we thought he was and his work ethic.”
The 49ers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in their preseason opener tomorrow night.
Per Bonilla, Shanahan said Garoppolo will start the game but will only play one series. Lance will play the remainder of the first half.
With this extended period of in-game action, Lance will look to continue his push for the starting job.
