The 49ers began the week on a surprising note by bringing in veteran cornerback Josh Norman.
Norman, 33, signed a one-year deal worth upwards of $2.5 million on Sunday. He’ll provide a steady veteran presence for a 49ers secondary in need of as much help as it can get.
“The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday they have signed CB Josh Norman to a one-year deal,” the team announces via 49ers.com. “… In 2020, Norman appeared in nine games (three starts) with Buffalo and finished with 24 tackles, four passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one interception. He also added six tackles and one forced fumble in three postseason games for the Bills.”
To make room for Norman on the roster, the 49ers had to release veteran cornerback Dontae Johnson. He had 23 tackles and one sack during the 2020 season.

The San Francisco 49ers are still one of the biggest mystery teams entering the 2021 season. The biggest question marks are in their secondary, offensive line and at quarterback.
Offensive line appears to be their biggest concern at the moment, though. The 49ers should have no problem with their rushing attack, but pass protection is an issue. It won’t matter who’s under center if the offensive line can’t keep him from hitting the turf.
Jimmy Garoppolo, meanwhile, will start at quarterback, as expected. Trey Lance will get opportunities in specific play designs. Some also speculate he’ll eventually replace Garoppolo as the starter at some point during the 2021 season. That will most likely only happen if Garoppolo is playing poorly and the 49ers aren’t winning.
San Francisco begins the 2021 season this Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Detroit Lions.
