The 49ers are moving away from San Francisco, the team made the news official on Monday.
Well, they’ll be moving from the Bay Area for at least two weeks, anyway.
In an expected move, the Niners (5-6) will have their next two home games held at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. Santa Clara County recently announced new COVID-19 restrictions which has caused the displacement.
The new rules go into effect Monday at 12:01 AM and will be lifted Dec. 21 at 5:00 AM. The 49ers have two home games in that window, including their upcoming contest against the Buffalo Bills (8-3) on Monday Night Football next weekend.
After that, the 49ers will host Washington, and then actually face the Cardinals in Week 16, after visiting the Cowboys in Week 15.
The 49ers released this statement on the matter on Monday:
“The San Francisco 49ers have come to an agreement with the National Football League and Arizona Cardinals which allows the 49ers to host their Weeks 13 and 14 home games against the Buffalo Bills and Washington Football Team at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
“The Cardinals organization, State Farm Stadium and League officials have been supportive and accommodating as we work through the many logistical issues involved in relocating NFL games.
“Information regarding the 49ers future practice arrangements will be shared at the appropriate time.”
While moving their team operations to Arizona is a reality the Niners will have to accept, that doesn’t mean they’re happy about it. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shannan was not very thrilled about the situation this past weekend.
“We’re working our tails off to try to figure it out. I know other people are, I’ve been doing this for the last 24 hours. You guys want to know the answer, so do our wives, so does everyone who knows us. It was very disappointing thing what we got yesterday. Our organization has been working their tails off since training camp with the county and trying to do this above and beyond all the NFL protocols, all the protocols they’ve asked for,” Shanahan said.
