During this week’s pre-draft press conference, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan refused to guarantee quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be on the roster by the end of the NFL draft. It wa a noticeable change in tone from previous discussions of the signal-caller. Many came away from the press conference sure that Garoppolo would be traded by the end of this week’s NFL draft.
Garoppolo has a no-trade clause, which could complicate matters for Niners brass. However, his non-guaranteed $24.1 million salary in 2021 should help them retain some leverage. It’s hard to imagine any NFL team taking on Garoppolo at his current cap number. Luckily, the 49ers can agree to retain a substantial portion of his base salary on their cap to increase his value.
While Garoppolo could threaten to veto trades to certain teams, San Francisco could also refuse to pick up his base salary for certain teams and thus, tell his agent Garoppolo either has to agree to the trade they want or risk being released and losing out on that $24.1 million.
With all that in mind, which five teams are most likely to want Garoppolo, and how much could San Francisco recoup in return?
