Oddsmakers are bullish on the Niners going into next season.
The San Francisco 49ers have been among the busiest teams in the NFL during the offseason. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan brought back several of the team’s key free agents, re-signing veterans Trent Williams, Kyle Juszczyk, Jaquiski Tartt, K’Waun Williams, Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley.
Many of the players who re-signed alluded to the fact that the 49ers didn’t get an opportunity to defend their 2019 NFC crown due to all of the injuries last season. The 2019 squad was dominant and came within minutes of winning the Super Bowl. The sentiment was that the 49ers would be a championship contender again in 2020.
Any hopes of winning a sixth Lombardi Trophy were dashed after Week 2. The 49ers stumbled to a 6-10 finish, but given all of their star power, NFL pundits are bullish on the Niners’ chances to get back into contention next season.
Lynch and Shanahan went outside the building to bring in some talent as well. They signed former All-Pro center Alex Mack, pass-rusher Samsom Ebukam and Trent Sherfield, among others. Lynch and Shanahan also made a bold move when they traded three first-round picks and a third-rounder to the Miami Dolphins in order to get the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft. The 49ers used the selection on North Dakota State QB Trey Lance, who will give Shanahan a security blanket if incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo cannot stay healthy again next season.
The 49ers’ nucleus is among the most talented groups in the league. With Williams, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa and George Kittle giving the team a championship core, expectations will be high for the 2021 campaign.
