Adam Peters has a second interview for the Panthers GM job

Peters becomes one of three finalists for Carolina

The Carolina Panthers have moved on to their second round of interviews for their vacant general manager position, and 49ers’ VP of Player Personnel Adam Peters is among the candidates that are moving forward.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also reported that Titans Director of Player Personnel Monti Ossenfort would receive a second interview. At the same time, ESPN’s Adam Schefter added that Seahawks VP of Football Operations Scott Fitterer would hold an in-person interview with Carolina on Wednesday.

Peters shares the same agent as Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. You’d think he’d have the advantage over the other three. Peters also played defensive end in college for a season at UCLA. Rhule was the defensive line coach for the Bruins in 2001. There are enough ties between the two that would lead one to believe that Peters is the favorite.

If Peters were to leave, the smoothest transition for the 49ers would be to promote Martin Mayhew to Peters’s current role. Mayhew currently serves as the team’s Vice President of Player Personnel before serving as the Niners Senior Personnel executive. Mayhew was the Lions general manager from 2008-2015.

Losing Peters in January, right before the Senior Bowl and as you really begin to dig into the NFL Draft process, would hurt. Peters was on the road this past college football season to watch BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, Alabama’s Mac Jones, and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Those are only the players Peters has publicly gone to see.

There’s no way for us to know how big an influence Peters, Mayhew, Lynch, or anyone else in the scouting department have. Knowing Peters has been on the road and seeing him at Pro Days last season, it’s safe to assume his voice is heard when the 49ers are making these decisions.

I’m curious whether Peters leaving would influence the team to keep or move on from specific players. We’ll see how it plays out.
