Injuries aren’t typically an excuse for an NFL team, but they played a significant role in the direction the 49ers’ season went.
Ultimately on-field mistakes did them in in their hunt for a playoff spot, but the lack of availability of star players and consistency at multiple positions became to tall of a mountain for San Francisco to overcome.
It wasn’t a normal year of injuries either. The 49ers didn’t have one or two players out. They used 84 different players, started three different quarterbacks, two different left tackles, three different centers, four different right guards, eight different cornerbacks and four different safeties.
It was a mess. To illustrate part of that mess, here is a list of players who missed more than half the season for San Francisco:
