Coaching carousel: Eagles fire Pederson; Cowboys looking at Quinn for their DC spot

January 11, 2021 by Niners Nation Leave a Comment

San Francisco 49ers v Philadelphia Eagles

Don’t expect the Eagles to make a run at Saleh

On Monday afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles fired head coach Doug Pederson after leading the team to a Super Bowl victory three seasons ago with a backup quarterback. Philly had their lowest win total, points per game average, and point differential since 2012 this past season. There were a million things wrong with that team this year.

Don’t expect the Eagles to be interested in 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, though. ESPN’s Tim McManus wrote that Philadelphia is looking for an “innovative offense and values coaches who have quarterback expertise.” That sounds like Bills OC Brian Daboll, who has helped turn Josh Allen into an MVP candidate. It could also mean Arthur Smith, who made Ryan Tannehill look like a top-10 quarterback. Either way, it’s unlikely it’ll be Saleh.

Speaking of defensive coordinators, former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn is expected to be named the DC for the Cowboys. According to Ian Rapoport, Quinn spent Saturday interviewing for the Cowboys DC job remotely, and he’s meeting with Dallas in-person on Monday. Reading the tea leaves, and what other reporters are saying about the situation, it sounds like Quinn will be calling the plays for the Cowboys defense in 2021.

That’s not a bad thing for San Francisco, as Quinn’s scheme feels outdated and he’s never shown that he could elevate the talent around him. Quinn’s still making a living off his “The Legion of Boom” days. Plus, Quinn man more 3-4 principles in Atlanta this past season most than fans realize. I’d say the 49ers dodged a bullet with Quinn—if there was any interest, to begin with.

I think we can expect more coaching dominoes to fall this week, which would mean we’ll know whether the 49ers need a new defensive coordinator, or if they need to replace any other coaches or personnel men.
