The 49ers host the Colts this upcoming season
The Philadelphia Eagles have traded QB Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional second-rounder in 2022. If Wentz plays more than 75% next season, then that conditional pick would become a first-rounder, per Adam Schefter.
The good news for the 49ers is they didn’t bet on a “broken” QB. Wentz is under contract for four more seasons, but his cap number in each season is well over $30 million, and we’ve seen a decline in his play each year since the Super Bowl run— a run where Wentz didn’t play during the playoffs. Wentz will reunite with his former OC in Philly, Frank Reich.
The Eagles sit at No. 6 overall in the NFL Draft. They selected Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Would they dare take a QB in the first round one year later? If I were them, I would.
Nothing about Hurts’ four starts or 148 attempts signaled that he would be a high-level starter in the NFL. Hurts had a TD/INT ratio of 6/4, and he fumbled eight times and was also sacked 12 times. Hurts’ highlights looked good, but Eagles fans will tell you themselves they weren’t all that impressed with the rookie QB.
That’s one more potential team in the way of a QB falling to No. 12 for San Francisco.
The Niners play the Colts next season, so we’ll get to see whether Wentz has improved firsthand.
