The San Francisco 49ers made it clear by trading up to the No. 3 spot in the NFL Draft that they intend to take a quarterback.
For now, the team is insisting that it does not intend to trade starter Jimmy Garoppolo, but at the very least, concerns about the quarterback’s health have caused the team to want to bring in another signal caller.
Longtime San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis understands this concern. In an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” Wednesday, Davis said he has no problem with the Niners keeping Garoppolo around, but also thinks it is wise to add another quarterback to the mix for competition and depth purposes.
“In order for us to win games, we have to put ourselves in the best situation possible,” Davis said. “I’m not against [general manager] John Lynch and the organization going out and finding another quarterback. It’s a business. They’re trying to win games and they can’t really rely on Jimmy G to stay healthy.”
What do the 49ers do with Garoppolo? @VernonDavis85 gives his thoughts:

The last three seasons encapsulate the major issue with Garoppolo. In 2019, he started all 16 games, performing capably as the Niners reached the Super Bowl.
However, in 2018 and 2020, the 29-year-old passer combined to play in only nine out of a possible 32 games due to injury. That can’t happen with a team that is in “win now” mode like San Francisco is.
It is no wonder why the Niners seem to want some more insurance at the position in 2021.
