While it’s been quiet on the 49ers end, the Cardinals first-round pick, Zaven Collins, was arrested for reckless driving over the weekend.
If Lance wins the job at the beginning of the season, it could lead to an eventful two weeks after the team’s final preseason game on Sunday, Aug. 29. The 49ers’ regular-season opener is Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Detroit Lions.
Barring a significant injury in training camp, it seems unlikely the 49ers would be able to trade Garoppolo if Lance takes over as the starter. It also seems unlikely another team would be willing to pay Garoppolo his scheduled pay for 2021 if he becomes available in early-September.
The 49ers would almost assuredly approach Garoppolo about accepting a dramatic pay cut to remain with them as the backup.
1. Trey Lance (49ers)
Don’t scoff. No, Lance has never set foot on an NFL field. And yes, rookie QBs struggle — even the good ones. But there’s a reason Kyle Shanahan moved up to take him No. 3 overall. This kid looks like the real deal both physically and mentally. At 21, he offers a world of potential as a dual threat with big-game experience. Jimmy Garoppolo may have a firmer handle on San Francisco’s playbook and the nature of the NFL, but Lance offers far more upside, not to mention within a pretty nice setup. He could take over sooner rather than later.
2. DT D.J. Jones
Jones re-signed with the 49ers in the offseason on a one-year, $3.5 million deal and should start as the other defensive tackle, barring injury.
Jones had a career high in sacks last year, with three on the season, despite the injuries on the defensive line this past season.
- Pretty much the entire season. Nick Bosa tore his ACL in Week 2 against the Jets. After that, nearly every prominent 49ers player was injured at one time or another. I would list them all here. But it seems excessively cruel. Let’s just say it was a bad season. It’s almost a miracle the 49ers won six games.
The competitive urgency index is: HIGH. Not that Kyle Shanahan is on the hot seat or anything. But this is obviously a crucial campaign for Jimmy Garoppolo, among others. And the 49ers have constructed a really good roster. They are expected to compete. For the Lombardi. So the urgency is high.
The 22-year-old — who was taken by the Cards with the #16 overall pick — was stopped by officers in AZ after cops say he was speeding and driving dangerously.
We’re working on further details regarding the incident … but a jail official tells us Collins was booked Sunday night and released a short time later.
We’ve reached out to Collins’ reps, the Cardinals and the NFL for comment … but so far, no word back yet.
Collins was driving 76 mph in a 35 mph zone.
“I’m a pretty private person so I hope you guys know that I’m not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important. I actually hope that one day, videos like this and the whole coming out process are not necessary, but until then I will do my best and my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting and compassionate and I’m going to start by donating $100,000 to the Trevor Project. They’re an incredible organization, they’re the number one suicide-prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America and they’re truly doing incredible things. I’m very excited to be a part of it and help in any way that I can and I’m really pumped to see what the future holds.”
NFL star pass rusher Frank Clark — one of the best defensive players in the league — was arrested Sunday after cops say he had an Uzi in his Lambo SUV … TMZ Sports has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell us Clark was pulled over for a routine traffic stop Sunday evening in Los Angeles … when cops say they noticed an open duffle bag in his ride.
Our sources say officers saw the firearm inside the bag … and arrested the 28-year-old for felony illegal possession of a firearm.
