Golden Nuggets: How important is Jimmy Garoppolo’s no-trade clause?

Well, Monday came with another wild QB proposal that led to a bunch of articles surrounding the topic. Here they are.

High prices. Patience needed. What I’m hearing about Patriots’ search for new QB

As it was expressed to The Athletic, if a quarterback has been perceived to be available, the Patriots have picked up the phone. The asking price of any of the available quarterbacks has not been disclosed.

The rest of the candidates on the trade market have been well-established: Deshaun Watson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Marcus Mariota and Sam Darnold. It’s possible Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater, Gardner Minshew and Nick Foles are also among that group.

Which QB domino is next to fall? The latest on the Bears, Texans, 49ers and more

Despite persistent speculation, the 49ers are standing by Garoppolo. That position seems increasingly unlikely to change, save for the potential of one major development. Coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated it would take an obvious upgrade to spend vital resources and move on from Garoppolo. The Texans’ Deshaun Watson is the only potentially available quarterback who clearly meets that criteria and the Niners are monitoring that situation closely as Houston attempts to reconcile with its estranged signal-caller.

But the 49ers’ comfort level with Garoppolo is high enough they can afford to be patient and wait it out.

What Jimmy G’s no-trade clause means for future with 49ers

There is absolutely no reason for him to think he could find a better situation outside of Santa Clara, outside of Shanahan’s offense.

Garoppolo might not be a bargain at his scheduled pay of $25.5 million (salary and bonuses) for the upcoming season, but the 49ers do not believe he is overpaid, either.

Still, it is difficult to imagine Garoppolo receiving a two-year, $51.1 million deal — the actual money remaining on his 49ers contract — right now if he were suddenly a free agent.

Things can change, of course, but right now the most likely scenario is that Jimmy Garoppolo goes nowhere and he earns that money with the 49ers.

Seven free agents 49ers could target to fill roster holes in offseason

Plan A is to keep Trent Williams in red and gold, but if the 49ers are unable to secure the eight-time Pro Bowl tackle they need to have a replacement plan in place. Robinson is a solid option that would cost the team less, while still providing blind side protection for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Robinson was a second round selection by the Jaguars out of Alabama and has played nearly every game since returning from an ACL injury that kept him out of all but two games in 2018. While the former Crimson Tide tackle has not been a standout on the offensive line, with proper coaching he can improve.

Pro Football Focus projects Robinson’s 2021 salary to be approximately $2 million which would allow the 49ers to secure the likes of Juszczyk with another multi-year deal while looking for their next tackle in the draft.

Simms can’t envision a 49ers trade scenario involving Nick Bosa

“I don’t think they would give away Nick Bosa,” Simms said. “I don’t. The defense is formulated around the pass rush. Dee Ford, it doesn’t look good that he’s going to be able to play. I don’t know where he’s going to be at. I mean, the injury has to be a concern. He was nonexistent [in 2020].

“Now, you’re going to lose Nick Bosa who really — we said this a lot — before the injury, Nick Bosa was one of the best defensive players in football. I don’t think Shanahan — I don’t think they would sacrifice that. I don’t. I don’t. I don’t think they would let go of Nick Bosa.”
