The finger-pointing will continue as the week goes along. Will we see any changes in the lineup? We know there will be a new right tackle.
Tom Compton, who entered the game in place of McGlinchey allowed four total pressures — one sack and three hurries. Right guard Daniel Brunskill allowed five total pressures — two sacks and three hurries.
Garoppolo was pressured a total of 18 times by a Cardinals defense that was operating without J.J. Watt.
The 49ers’ defense only recorded 12 total pressures on Cardinal backup quarterback Colt McCoy. Arik Armstead and Arden Key both registered sacks but Nick Bosa led the group with four total pressures — two hits and two hurries.
We can start at right guard where starter Daniel Brunskill struggled again. Notre Dame offensive guard Aaron Banks was taken in the second round to compete for the starting right guard spot. He’s been a healthy scratch in all but one game. Perhaps he’s so bad at football that putting him in the game would endanger the players he’s blocking for. If that’s the case then San Francisco has an entirely separate issue. If it’s not the case, he should be suiting up and getting at least some snaps to see how he responds in game situations.
The secondary is another problem the 49ers tried to address via the NFL draft. They took Michigan cornerback Ambry Thomas in the third round, then double-dipped and took Oregon CB Deommodore Lenoir in Round 5. Neither player has gotten consistent time this season while Josh Norman and Dre Kirkpatrick get meaningful snaps at cornerback.
“It’s the same thing as usual guys. Just dealing with that back,” Shanahan said. “We’re not sure. If it lingers very long, we’ll probably go to short time short-term IR, but we haven’t decided that yet. He is on short-term IR, we just don’t know whether he’ll be able to be back in three weeks. It’s day-to-day with that stuff. So we know it’s at least three games, but we’ll wait and see after that.”
It’s good news that the 49ers aren’t ruling Ford out, but another back issue for the 30-year-old defensive end is not an optimistic sign for the rest of his 2021 season.
Givens is an undersized, quick-burst type of defensive tackle who is best used on obvious passing downs. Street is one of the most powerful players on the team, ought to be better at anchoring and should be the natural replacement in the middle for Javon Kinlaw, who is out for the season following ACL reconstruction surgery. Both Givens and Street, however, have been consistently washed out of running plays throughout the season.
The 49ers selected cornerback Ambry Thomas at the end of the third round. Later, Deommodore Lenoir was chosen in the fifth round.
The door is wide open for a young cornerback to step in and play on the side opposite of Emmanuel Moseley.
Norman has distinguished himself for his un-veteran-like play. In six games, he committed a team-high seven penalties: Four pass interference, two defensive holdings and a taunting penalty on Sunday that finally got him benched.
