We’ve heard reports that the 49ers called on Matthew Stafford, that Kyle Shanahan is high on Sam Darnold, and, on Monday night, a report surfaced that the Niners have called the Eagles about Wentz.

You’ll read Ben Allbright’s tweet below, but Eagles beat writer Elliott Shorr-Parks also said he’s heard the 49ers are interested in Wentz as well as long-time Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus.

Chiefs’ Super Bowl penalties give 49ers fans mixed emotions

On Sunday, the referees called 15 total penalties for 159 yards, which was a stark contrast to last year. The Chiefs were stung for 11 of those calls for 120 yards. After the game, defensive tackle Chris Jones noted the difference between the two games.

“I was very surprised,” Jones said. “This is the Super Bowl. Usually you let the guys play especially in the biggest game of the year. Penalties changed the game. We had penalties for 100 yards. That speaks volumes, especially in the biggest game of the year.

“Penalties affect the game one thousand percent. What can I say. We got a lot of penalties called on us today.”

In Super Bowl LIV, the 49ers headed into the locker room at the half after George Kittle was called for offensive pass interference. The penalty negated a 42-yard play that would have set Robbie Gould up for an easy field goal and a 13-10 lead.

The Biggest Lesson the 49ers Should Have Learned from Super Bowl LV

Quarterback is not the 49ers’ biggest need — offensive line is. Today, the 49ers announced they re-signed Josh Rosen, who’s more talented than any offensive lineman the 49ers currently have under contract (Trent Williams is a free agent).

The 49ers should let Garoppolo and Rosen compete in training camp for a starting job behind a retooled offensive line.

Give each quarterback a fair shot to win the job and stay healthy.

Give them some freaking blockers.

Allbright: 49ers, Texans ‘made calls’ to inquire about Eagles QB Carson Wentz

“Basically 2 or 3 teams in it, but not at Eagle’s price point,” wrote Allbright via Twitter. “Leaks on ‘compensation’ coming from the Philly side, because they’re trying to get teams involved and drive the price up.”

They’ve talked, as has Indy.

Niners and (surprise) Texans have made calls that I’m aware of.

Lot of “offers” getting leaked, which usually means the team shopping a player is still fishing. https://t.co/6frz0uWMdc

Jerry Rice concedes GOAT status to Tom Brady, but 49ers legend says he played in more physical era

“I don’t have seven Super Bowl rings, but I think I played in an era when football was more of a contact sport. You’re seeing a lot of that now — players are protected,” Rice said, via Pro Football Talk. “When you have seven rings, you’re doing something right. I think with Brady, he still wants to play. He said something about playing until he’s 45. I think he can do it now in this league because players are so much more protected. So, yeah, he can have that GOAT status. I never wanted that status anyhow.”

Again, this is not to take away from what Rice has done, but Brady has won at such a clip — even prior to this latest Lombardi — that it seems silly to put anyone above him anymore.

2021 Mock Draft Monday 3.0: 49ers Zero in on Cornerback in Round 1

Joe Marino, The Draft Network: QB Zach Wilson, BYU

  • TRADE: Miami Dolphins trade No. 3, No. 18, No. 81, Tua Tagovailoa, Xavien Howard, and a 2022 first-round pick to the Houston Texans for Deshaun Watson and pick No. 120. San Francisco 49ers trade No. 12, No. 44, No. 116 and a 2022 first-round pick to the Houston Texans for No. 3 overall.

“Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch just watched their division-rival Rams make an aggressive move to upgrade their quarterback position with the trade for Matthew Stafford, so it’s time for their counter move. Instead of giving up two first-round picks for a 33-year-old quarterback, the 49ers can ‘one-up’ the competition by making an aggressive move up the order for Zach Wilson. Not only can Wilson hit the rhythm throws in Shanahan’s offense, but he brings mobility and an exciting vertical passing component to the table that has been missing in San Francisco. Wilson has the skill set to take Shannahan’s offense to the next level and provide a long-term answer to the position.”
