The 49ers are expected to tap linebackers coach DeMeco Ryans as their replacement for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. One future Hall of Famer that played with Ryans is a fan of that idea.
Ryans only started coaching in 2017 and played in the NFL as recently as 2015. He was a Defensive Rookie of the Year and a two-time Pro Bowler for the Texans in six seasons with the club from 2006-11. Defensive end JJ Watt was Ryans’s teammate for one season in 2011 – Watt’s rookie year and Ryans’s final season with the club.
Watt took to Twitter to weigh in on the potential promotion for his former teammate:

Given the rave reviews Ryans has drawn from 49ers players like linebacker Dre Greenlaw and cornerback Richard Sherman, along with Saleh and head coach Kyle Shanahan, Watt is spot on in his assessment of Ryans’s coaching ability.
As a player Ryans had a very effective 10-year career. The Texans selected him No. 33 overall in the 2006 draft. He played in Houston for six seasons before moving on to Philadelphia for his final four years. Ryans racked up 970 tackles, 13.5 sacks and seven interceptions in 140 games. The only game he didn’t start in 10 years came in his final season.
The 49ers gave Ryans his start in coaching in 2017. He was a defensive quality control coach for one year before being promoted to inside linebackers coach. Now he’ll be getting his second promotion to the highest position on the defensive staff.
