Wouldn’t it have been better for both teams to play Monday?
What do you get when you cross a depleted roster with a short week and multiple COVID absences? You get an effort like we saw last night in Thursday Night Football, a 34-17 boat race. Despite multiple players from both teams missing the game due to COVID-19 complications, there was never a thought to delaying the game until Monday or Tuesday night.
After the game, Kyle Shanahan was asked if the game should have been played as scheduled, and didn’t take the bait.
“I don’t really think about that stuff at all. It was never brought up, pushing the game back. We’ve been planning on it being Thursday at five and that never changed. We’re working together with the league and all that stuff and that was never brought up so I never really thought about it.”
I don’t believe that for one second. Surely it must have crossed Kyle’s mind at some point that the NFL had the power to push the game to Monday or Tuesday, and surely it had crossed his mind that the NFL did so earlier this year.
I wonder if he purposely slipped in the phrase, “it was never brought up” twice in his answer as a jab to the league office for making his team field such a terrible starting lineup this week. I’m not saying he did, but I’m not saying he didn’t either.
