The NFL implemented a new system for roster cuts this season where teams cut their 90-man rosters down gradually twice before the slice to 53 players after the final preseason game.
Here’s what the cut-down schedule looks like:
August 17, 1:00 pm PST: Roster cut to maximum 85 players
August 24, 1:00 pm PST: Roster cut to maximum 80 players
August 31, 1:00 pm PST: Roster cut to maximum 53 players
The 49ers wound up getting a little bit of a head start on their cuts with a few players getting released the Monday after their first preseason game. They also sent one player to Injured Reserve, which is another way of cutting down offseason roster spots.
