The San Francisco 49ers are in no rush to make a decision on veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
At the start of the offseason, the Niners were reportedly receiving plenty of interest in Garoppolo. However, that interest died down in a hurry when it was revealed he’d undergo off-season shoulder surgery. He’s been rehabbing ever since.
Some fans have called on the 49ers to release Garoppolo now to clear up major cap space they could then use on free agents. But, as John Lynch reiterated on Monday, there’s no point to simply get rid of a player of Garoppolo’s caliber for nothing in return.
San Francisco would be inclined to wait things out. There’s always a chance a team becomes interested in Garoppolo when he’s healthy later this year.
“Guys like that don’t fall out of trees,” Lynch said, via Pro Football Talk. “He’s a good player at a position where they’re hard to find. You certainly just don’t give guys like that away and we can, I guess, foot the bill if you want to describe it as that. We’ll be patient with that one.”
The good news is the 49ers appear committed to handing the reins over to Trey Lance. By all accounts, he will start for the team this upcoming season.
Garoppolo, meanwhile, may indeed start out the season on the 49ers’ roster. But he’ll be moved at some point this fall, in all likelihood.
