The Shanaplan: The Trey Lance clothes episode

Fans were upset that Lance was wearing something during a workout that wasn’t masculine enough for their liking

With the offseason comes some of the sillier topics you can imagine. We’ve had fans upset that Trey Lance, a 21-year-old, wore a Los Angeles Dodgers hat. Yes, I’m aware of the baseball rivalry. But, no, it’s not a big deal. Ever.

The silly season continued as there was a slight uproar recently because Lance was wearing, on the surface level, a sports bra:

Forget the fact that this is a medical device that monitors your heart rate, tracks your conditioning and max speed, and that high-level athletes across the world have been wearing this for years.

The focus was on the optics, and there were a significant amount of men who couldn’t get past the look. I see these daily at the high school level and was under the assumption that this is common knowledge athletes wear these tracking devices.

I was in for a rude awakening when I opened up Twitter. You’d think that this was the first time watching sports for some fans based on the commentary. But, whether they’re not comfortable under their own skin or whatever it may be, the hyper-masculinity culture surrounding sports is toxic, and this is a prime example.

This is what we discussed to open the podcast:

Other topics include:

  • Who has the most to gain on both sides of the ball during training camp
  • The worst-case scenario for the 49ers this season
  • Mr. Irreplaceable on both sides of the ball

This is offseason noise and something for someone who wants to get mad at something a reason to be mad.

I wish no athlete would post their offseason workouts. On the other side of the coin, too often, we fall for a six-second video of a player doing drills and think it’ll translate to them becoming an All-Pro. D.J. Jones had a funny tweet about that on Tuesday:

All this posting ya workouts and shit cool but when them live bullets come ain’t gone be no do overs

Pros are supposed to work out. Pros can work out in whatever they please. Come November; nobody will remember this. We want Trey Lance to throw touchdowns and win games. If it takes him wearing high heels in the offseason to improve his footwork, I couldn’t care less, and you shouldn’t either.

Two more Saturdays until training camp starts, and we’ll be back to tangible football, friends.
