It’s long been expected that Las Vegas would let Williams go to free up salary cap space

We’ve seen this one coming since last summer.

NFL Media is reporting that the Las Vegas Raiders are planning to cut wide receiver Tyrell Williams at the start of the NFL league year (next month) in a salary-cap move.

The #Raiders plan to release WR Tyrell Williams at the start of the league year next month, per source. Williams missed the entire 2020 season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery, but should be fully healthy in 2-3 weeks. He’s still only 28.

The Raiders are expected to release multiple players as they try to create more salary cap room. Williams was considered the most obvious candidate as he had to have shoulder surgery just before the start of the 2020 season and missed the entire season.

The move will save the Raiders $11 million that they can use in free agency. Williams signed with the Raiders in 2019 from the rival Los Angeles Chargers for four years and $44 million. The Raiders have paid him half of that and all they got was 42 catches and six touchdowns.

Williams came to the Raiders as a player with big-play ability, but he was often injured. That played out and Williams will go down as another player in this Jon Gruden era who was a free-agent flop.

With the Williams move in the works, now attention turns to other Las Vegas players who could be salary-cap releases as well, including right tackle Trent Brown and defensive back Lamarcus Joyner.
