Losing Streak Ends at Eleven
The Inter-League series with the Philadelphia Philles came to a close for the Athletics today at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Gunnar Hoglund took the mound today against former A’s starter Jesus Luzardo. Luzardo has been dominant in 2025 with a 5-0 record and 1.96 ERA.
Jacob Wilson got the A’s off to the start they hoped for, blasting Luzardo’s first pitch of the day to left centerfield for a home run. That was Wilson’s first-ever leadoff homer. Rooker and Andujar each singled and then Logan Davidson doubled, his first major league hit, to score Rooker and Andujar giving the A’s a 3-0 in the first.
Hoglund cruised through the first inning but walked the first three batters he faced in the top of the second. J.T. Realmuto ground into a double play, but a run scored. Alec Bohm flied out to shallow center, to end the inning.
The Phillies got a bit closer in the third inning. Brandon Marsh doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later Trea Turner singled, scoring Marsh. At the end of three, the score remained 3-2.
Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh each singled to lead off the top of the fifth. Bryson Stott moved Bohm to third on a fly out, and Trea Turner hit a sacrifice fly to score him. That tied the score at three.
Hogan Harris took over for Hoglund in the top of the sixth. Hoglund’s final line was 5.0 innings, four hits, three earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. He left with a no decision.
In the top of the seventh, J.T. Realmuto hit a sharp liner to Denzel Clarke, who made a running, diving catch to rob him of a hit.

The top of the seventh was uneventful except for two ejections by Home Plate Umpire Roberto Ortiz. During Miguel Andujar’s at-bat, Kotsay was ejected for arguing a questionable strike call and “waving his finger” at Ortiz. After a swinging strike three to Andujar he barked at Ortiz who then threw him out of the game.
Harris had set down each of the seven Phillies he faced, but Trea Turner homered off him in the top of the eighth to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead. Matt Strahm relieved Luzardo in the bottom of the eighth. Logan Davidson continued his great “first start” with a walk. He then scored on Lawrence Butler’s triple.

Willie MacIver singled to drive in Butler. That was McIver’s first hit in the majors. His first hit gave him his first RBI and gave the A’s the lead once again.
Mason Miller came on to pitch the ninth. Max Kepler grounded out and Realmuto struck out swinging. Alec Bohm beat out an infield hit to Luis Urías. Luis Urías. Johan Rojas pinch ran for Bohm. He attempted to steal second, but Willie MacIver gunned him down to end the game! That gave Miller his twelfth save of the season and ended the A’s eleven-game losing streak.

The A’s are idle tomorrow (Memorial Day), which feels tremendously wrong, but will take on the Houston Astros at Daikin Park (formerly Minute Maid) on Tuesday.
