A’s drop series finale to Brewers 14-1

That wasn’t fun

The A’s got punched in the mouth on Sunday afternoon, getting walloped by the Milwaukee Brewers 14-1 in the series finale as the road trip comes to an end on a losing note.

Starting for the A’s today was lefty Jeffrey Springs. Making his fourth start of the season Springs got hit hard in the first inning, continuing a trend for Springs here in 2025. A pair of errors from battery mate Shea Langeliers didn’t make things any easier for Springs but the left-hander was struggling out of the gate, which is becoming a common theme for him. Springs allowed another run in the second inning and another in the third off a home run. His day would come to an early end as he would ultimately fall to 3-2 in his A’s career.

  • Jeffrey Springs: 2 1⁄3 IP, 5 H, 6 R (4 ER), 4 BB, 3 K, 68 pitches

That’s another start where Springs got hit hard early on. It’s a worrying trend as the team acquired the veteran this offseason to form a 1-2 punch with Luis Severino atop the starting rotation. Instead the lefty now sports a 5.64 ERA over five starts. To make matters worse he left today’s game with an injury, ending his day abruptly in the middle of the third inning:

We don’t yet know if the A’s plan to place Springs on the injured list but that seems like a definite possibility. A stay on the IL may also help Springs to reset and hopefully return to the team with some adjustments that’ll help. We will be monitoring any possible roster moves to come.

After Springs came Mitch Spence for an appearance. The right-hander allowed just one run in 2 2⁄3 innings pitched and could be a candidate to step into the rotation should Springs miss time. After Spence came TJ McFarland, who allowed a run in an inning of work, and then Rule 5 pick Noah Murdock. Milwaukee was all over the rookie pitcher as he allowed five runs in the seventh and couldn’t manage to finish the frame. He now has a huge 10.64 ERA and it’s worth wondering how much longer the team will allow Murdock to struggle. As a Rule 5 pick the team would have to give Murdock back to the Kansas City Royals so it’s not as simple as demoting him to Triple-A.

The A’s would not be shut out today though as Seth Brown launched his first home run of the season in the fifth, a solo shot to get the A’s on the board and avoid the shutout:

That was it from the offense as the rest of the team managed just three more hits, all singles. The team had no answer for Brewers rookie right-hander Logan Henderson, who was making his big league debut this afternoon. Shortstop Jacob Wilson accounted for two of the four A’s hits and extended his hitting streak to five games. He’s only gone hitless once all season and he’s still looking for his first walk of the year. The only other player to get a hit was Luis Urias, who collected a base knock in the fifth.

Well that wasn’t fun. The team ends the road trip on a sour note and are now 10-12 but the squad still went 4-2 on the road trip thanks to last week’s sweep of the White Sox. The team will now head back to Sacramento and enjoy an off day on Monday before starting a new series. The team will welcome their division rivals Texas Rangers to Sutter Health for the first time this season. Texas currently leads the AL West with a 13-9 record. It’ll be Osvaldo Bido taking the ball for the home team while the Rangers will turn to veteran lefty Patrick Corbin.
