Swapping out one veteran for another
The Athletics announced a roster transaction in the hours leading up to the second game of the Astros series, activating third baseman Gio Urshela off the injured list while simultaneously placing outfielder Seth Brown on the 10-day IL:
The Athletics reinstated infielder Gio Urshela from the 10-day injured list and placed outfielder Seth Brown on the 10-day IL retroactive to June 13 with left elbow lateral epicondylitis, the club announced today.

Urshela returns to the Athletics after about three weeks due to that hamstring strain. He was hitting just .224/.276/.337 with no home runs in 32 games at the time of his injury. Since he’s been gone rookie infielder Max Muncy has gotten the bulk of the reps at the hot corner and Urshela’s returns to likely doesn’t alter that. Muncy is in the lineup tonight at third while Urshela will be available off the bench.
To make room for Urshela the club placed Brownie on the 10-day IL with an injury to his throwing elbow. The longtime Athletic only just rejoined the team after getting designated for assignment a couple weeks ago, but now instead of passing through waivers he’ll instead rest and rehab, and try to reset his season when he returns. There is no timetable for that as of now.
