And Grant Holman to the IL
The Athletics announced a minor roster move on Thursday afternoon before their finale with the Astros, recalling right-handed reliever Anthony Maldonado while sending righty Osvaldo Bido back to Triple-A:
The Athletics recalled right-handed pitcher Anthony Maldonado from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher Osvaldo Bido to Las Vegas, the club announced today. The A’s also announced that right-handed pitcher Grant Holman had his Monday optional assignment voided…

The move isn’t especially surprising since Bido has given up a run in each of his three relief appearances and a total of five runs since being recalled earlier in the month. That’s not going to cut it for the A’s so sending him back down to Triple-A to resume starting duties is the best course of action.
Rookie righty Maldonado will return to the A’s after spending all of June down in Triple-A. Maldonado spent a couple weeks with the club in the second half of April, making his big league debut and tossing six innings and allowing eight runs over six appearances. He’s only allowed one run in seven outings since returning to the Aviators, and he’ll now rejoin an Athletics bullpen still searching for the right formula.
The surprising bit of news at the end there concerns righty reliever Grant Holman. He was originally just optioned to Triple-A but this injury will change that. He’ll instead be on the major league IL, where he’ll have to spend at least 15 days before being activated. There’s no word on the seriousness of his injury but it’s an ominous-sounding diagnosis. He’s sporting a 5.09 ERA in 22 appearances for the A’s this year, his first full season in the bigs.
