Athletics Acquire Right-Hander from Astros as Injuries Decimate Pitching Depth

May 17, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Per a team announcement, the Oakland Athletics have acquired pitcher Brandon Bielak from the Houston Astros in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, Oakland made room on the 40-man roster by designating lefty Easton Lucas for assignment.

The Athletics acquired Bielak after losing four starters in a two-week span this month. Oakland sits just five and a half games out of first place thanks to surprisingly strong pitching. Bolstering the pitching staff was crucial if the team wanted to remain in any semblance of contention, let alone simply covering innings.

Brandon Bielak Traded to A’s from Astros

Bielak is not an established arm or guaranteed to upgrade Oakland’s pitching staff. However, the 28-year-old has some major league success under his belt and should be a serviceable arm for the Athletics. In 70 MLB games (21 starts), Bielak has tossed 191 2/3 innings with a 4.65 ERA (91 ERA+).

In fact, Bielak was an above-average arm in a swingman role from 2021-2023. During this time, he posted a 4.05 ERA (104 ERA+) across 142 1/3 innings. He doesn’t possess great stuff, nor will he strike many batters out. However, he’s a changeup/sinker pitcher with a good ability to generate ground balls.

Additionally, Bielak’s upside might be seen through his solid minor league track record. In 100 games, the righty owns a 3.24 ERA with 463 punch-outs and 160 walks in 433 1/3 innings. Houston has long liked his upside and potential, but he struggled to put it all together in the majors.

Bielak made Houston’s Opening Day roster due to his lack of minor league options. Unfortunately, he struggled mightily in his last opportunity to establish himself with the Astros. In 17 1/3 innings across 10 games, Bielak posted a 5.71 ERA (67 ERA+) with a career-low strikeout and walk rates.

Despite lacking organizational pitching depth, Houston designated Bielak for assignment over the weekend when the team activated Cristian Javier from the 15-day injured list. This continued a trend of Houston moving on from depth pieces, as the team traded outfielder Corey Julks to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

The Athletics Need Arms Right Now

The Athletics acquired Bielak one day after placing starter Alex Wood on the injured list. Oakland’s starting depth has been tested this month, and Bielak serves as an intriguing arm to cover innings. Though it’s unclear who will start for Wood on Friday, Bielak could step in and provide a few innings in the rotation or bullpen.
