The offense did not show up today!
The Athletics faced off against the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit today, hoping to take the series finale and the series from the Detroit Tigers before continuing this road trip in New York. Jefferey Springs got the call today against Dietrich Enns for the Tigers.
Spencer Torkelson got the scoring started with a solo homer to left center. At the end of two, the Tigers led 1-0.
Max Schuemann singled to lead off the third inning and promptly stole second. Denzel Clarke walked. Jacob Wilson lined out to center but was able to move Schuemann to third with just one out. That brought up Brent Rooker, who unfortunately ground into a double play to end the inning.
Parker Meadows singled in the bottom of the third inning. Gleyber Torres walked and then Jahmai Jones doubled to score both baserunners. At the end of three, the Tigers led 3-0.
Springs worked himself into and out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth. He was up to seventy-seven pitches at the end of four. He lasted through five innings with a final line of three earned runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. J.T. Ginn replaced him in the bottom of the sixth.
Parker Meadows singled in the bottom of the seventh inning and Gleyber Torres followed with a homer to right field. That extended the Tigers lead to 5-0.
The A’s went down quietly, despite two pinch hitters in the eighth. In fact, they’ve only been able to muster three base hits all day and hit into two double plays to erase those baserunners.
T.J. McFarland replaced Ginn in the bottom of the eighth inning. He was greeted with two singles by Spencer Torkelson and Wenceel Pérez. Zack McKinstry followed with a triple to score Torkelson and Pérez. Jake Rogers scored McKinstry with a sac fly to left field. At the end of eight full innings, the Tigers led the A’s 8-0.
The A’s went quietly in the ninth with two ground outs and a strikeout. The A’s were outhit twelve to three and shut out 8-0. So much for heading into New York with some momentum.
