
Webb dominates, Severino falters again at home
Game two of the San Francisco Giants vs. Athletics series continued at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento tonight. The A’s trounced the Giants in game one last night 11-2, where the A’s bats started the fireworks for fans. Luis Severino faced off against Logan Webb for the Giants.
Severino showed his control issues in the top of the first, loading the bases on two hit batters and a walk. With two down, Willie Adames singled up the middle scoring Rafael Devers and Matt Chapman. Headed to the bottom of the first inning, the Giants took an early 2-0 lead.
Severino regained his control in the second with an easy 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the second, Nick Kurtz doubled off the wall in straight-away center field, missing a homer by inches. Langeliers singled softly to Chapman at third. Tyler Soderstrom ground into a double play but it scored Kurtz from third making the score 2-1.
With two outs in the top of the third, Chapman, Lee, and Adames all singled. Adames hit scored both Chapman and Lee increasing the Giants lead to 4-1.
Heliot Ramos led off the top of the fifth inning with a homer to centerfield just out of the reach of a leaping Denzel Clarke. Rafael Devers walked and Matt Chapman ground into a force out for the first out of the inning. That ended the night for Severino. Severino’s final line was 4.1 innings, five earned runs on five hits and two walks. Sean Newcomb replaced him and shut down the inning. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Max Muncy doubled to left field. He moved to third on a fly out by Gelof to centerfield. A Clarke strikeout stranded Muncy at third. At the end of five, the score stood at 5-1.
Dom Smith was plunked by a pitch to start off the sixth. He was the third HBP for A’s pitching this game. Patrick Bailey doubled, moving Smith to third. Brett Wisely doubled, scoring Baily and Smith. Yastrzemski grounded out to Kurtz unassisted, moving Wisely to third with just one out. That was all for Newcomb, who was replaced by Justin Sterner. With two down, Kotsay decided to walk Devers to face Chapman. That risk paid off as Chapman flied out softly to center for the third out. Headed to the bottom of the sixth, the Giants led 7-1. Lawrence Butler led off with a double. Wilson moved him to third with a ground out. Rooker walked and Nick Kurtz doubled to score Butler easily. Rooker was held at third. Langeliers walked to load the bases for Tyler Soderstrom. He ground into a double play to end the inning and slam the door on the rally. The A’s scored one, tightening the score slightly to 7-2.
Two Shea Langeliers errors nearly cost the A’s another run. After dropping a foul pop up, Willie Adames singled. He moved to second on a Langeliers passed ball. Adames took third on a ground out, but Patrick Bailey lined out to Clarke in center to end the inning.
With tow outs in the bottom of the seventh, Denzel Clarke doubled, and Lawrence Butler worked a walk. After 108 pitches that was it for Webb. But Jacob Wilson popped out to end the threat.
Hogan Harris replaced Sterner in the top of the eighth. Wisely singled and attempted to score on a Devers double to left field, but Wilson nailed him at home to end the inning. The A’s bats were quiet for the remainder of the game, and it ended 7-2 in favor of the Giants. The two teams will play a Sunday night game tomorrow to determine the winner of the series.
