MLB news roundup
Happy Wednesday, Athletics Nation!
The A’s couldn’t quite manage a comeback in the Bronx yesterday after the Yankees put up a four-run first inning. The 4-3 loss tied the series at a game apiece with two to go. Joe Boyle is starting on the mound today; both he and the A’s need a big win today to get their season back on track and retake the lead in this four-game series.
Game one of this A’s-Yankees series featured late heroics from second baseman Zack Gelof and breakout reliever Mason Miller. Martin Gallegos at MLB.com wrote a batter-by-batter account of Miller’s latest brilliant save effort, while Brodie Brazil at NBC Sports Bay Area had a conversation with Gelof on topics ranging from the young star’s callup last year to players he strives to emulate, such as Marcus Semien.
Tyler Soderstrom continues to tear it up in Triple-A, hopefully leveling up one last time so he can return to the A’s and play up to his potential in the big leagues. Be sure to check out the latest minor league and prospects update from AN’s own Garrett Spain for more on Sodie’s hot streak and other goings on among the A’s up-and-coming.
Who said social media is a complete waste of time? Well, I may have, but if you have a 98 mph heater it might be worth getting the word out. Oakland Ballers manager Micah Franklin posted a tweet showcasing Ballers pitcher Danny Kirwin and his newly improved stuff last week. The result? Kirwin now has a minor league deal with the Red Sox. Check out this story from Melissa Lockard at the Athletic for more details.
