MLB news roundup
Happy Wednesday, Athletics Nation!
Not everything you throw against the wall sticks. The A’s made a reasonable enough bet when they signed veteran reliever Dylan Floro to a minor league deal last offseason; but as of yesterday, Floro is no more-o. The A’s released the righty, who pitched to a 7.04 ERA through 16 appearances in Triple-A.
Jason Burke at SI.com notes that outside of an especially horrific outing on May 31, Floro had a pretty good line going with the Aviators. But the 34-year-old’s peripherals have declined in recent years: the fastball velocity averages below 90 mph corresponding with a reduced K rate, and Floro’s’ ground ball rate was at just 40.4% in Vegas—well below his 50.6% career average in the majors.
With better options like newly promoted prospect Jack Perkins emerging to shore up the A’s pitching depth, the team has apparently decided to move on. Floro has had a solid career through nine seasons in MLB, with a 3.49 ERA through 402⅔ innings.
Floro pitched very well for the Nationals in 2024, but his season went off the rails after he was traded to the Diamondbacks, with whom he logged a 9.37 ERA through 15 appearances before being designated for assignment. Floro’s fortunes haven’t turned around in the A’s organization, so he’s back on the market to see if another club will give him a chance to turn things around. Best of luck, Dylan Floro!
