Elephant Rumblings: Going For The Sweep

MLB news roundup

Morning everyone! Welcome to Thursday A’s fans.

The A’s will go for their first sweep of this season this morning as they wrap up their series with the White Sox. The Green & Gold have done exactly what they needed to in this series, pairing timely hitting with quality performances from their starting pitchers. Osvaldo Bido in particular looked dominant again yesterday as he stifled the Chicago lineup for almost six full innings with just one run allowed.

The top half of the lineup continued to get it done during this series as Lawrence Butler, Brent Rooker, and Tyler Soderstrom collected hits in both contests. Soderstrom, whose 2-homer performance on Tuesday gave him the league lead in home runs, continues his hot start to the season and will be looking for long ball #9 this afternoon.

The A’s will turn to third-year lefty JP Sears to finish off the sweep and leave Chicago on a winning note. Sears will be making his fourth start today. His 4.24 ERA doesn’t look great on paper but Sears has mostly been what the A’s expected from him this year. The lefty hasn’t been unhittable but he has kept the opponents from running away, keeping the games close and giving the A’s a chance to win. He’s only 1-2 so far this year but he’ll have an excellent chance to even up his record with a strong performance today. And against White Sox lineup that has struggled in this series and all season long, the hope and expectation is that Sears will come out of the gates with his A-game and finish off the White Sox before continuing the road trip tomorrow in Milwaukee.

A win today would move the A’s up to 9-10 and with a little bit of good fortune and help from the Reds (who face the Mariners today) the Athletics could be in third place in the AL West by the end of the day. That and a sweep on the table? That should be plenty of motivation for the guys in the clubhouse.

Have an excellent day everyone!
