MLB news roundup
Happy Friday, Athletics Nation!
My lucky number has been 27 since I was a kid—in part because it was worn by my hero, Catfish Hunter. A’s infielder Max Muncy might have an affinity for the number now too, since it marks the day in March 2025 on which the A’s No. 7 ranked prospect made the big league roster and his MLB debut. He even got top billing among the infielders in this tweet—though that was clearly for alphabetic reasons.
The wait is over….

Darragh McDonald at MLB Trade Rumors notes that the other Max Muncy—the one who started with the A’s but became a star with the Dodgers—not only shares the same name and was drafted by the same team, but also shares the same August 25 birthday. That’s quite a coincidence.
But the Dodgers’ Max Muncy is 12 years older and was a fifth round pick, while our Max Muncy was a first round pick and isn’t even 23 yet.
At 22 years and 214 days, Max Muncy is the seventh-youngest Opening Day starting second baseman in A’s history and youngest since Shooty Babitt in 1981 (22 years, 31 days).

One last funny thing—Max the Elder’s Fangraphs page sure does look like it has Max the Younger’s photo on it at the moment I am typing this sentence.
Muncy, as I’ll call the A’s Max Muncy from here on out, gets a chance to make an impression in the bigs right out the gate this year because the A’s need someone to cover second base while Zack Gelof recovers from hand surgery. He looked pretty clearly outmatched by Mariners starter Logan Gilbert in last night’s season opener, but so did just about everyone else in the A’s lineup. It’s early yet.
If you’re still hankering for more Max, well, I’ve got good news for you: The Blogfather scored an interview with Muncy last week and posted it right here on AN for your enjoyment. This is exclusive, top shelf content that you absolutely must check out.
Have a wonderful weekend, AN.
