MLB news roundup
Happy Friday, Athletics Nation!
‘Twas another day and another unceremonious pounding for the Athletics yesterday, this time in the Great White North of Toronto, Canada. After a promising start last week, Jacob Lopez got hammered by the Blue Jays yesterday. This underscores the fact that the A’s are in deep crisis when it comes to pitching.
The A’s have now lost 18 of their last 20 games. The offense has certainly underwhelmed lately as well, but it is the pitching that is really killing this team. Through the last 30 games, the A’s pitchers have posted an ERA of 6.40. That makes them the worst in MLB by far over the past month—even the Rockies have a substantially “better” ERA of 5.66 through the same span.
In the same time frame, the A’s relievers are 4-for-13 in save opportunities. The bullpen is indeed a huge liability for the A’s with an era over 6.00 for the entire season so far. Right now, it seems like the only way to win is behind Luis Severino or Jeffrey Springs on a good day—provided the offense can get a few timely hits, which they have seemingly failed to do more often than not lately.
The situation seems so dire at the moment that it’s tempting to write off the season, get back into a “full rebuild” mentality, and wait for some potentially better arms like Luis Morales and Gage Jump to work their way to the big league club. This is going to take awhile.
If you’ve got reasons to be more optimistic about the season going forward, I’m all ears.
Have a wonderful weekend, AN.

Can’t sleep. Thinking about how Seth Brown has three bombs over the last two days since being DFA’d. #Athletics pic.twitter.com/VQ1Cj5DVQG

When your backup catcher is better than half your bullpen.
A’s backup catcher is apparently the position player pitcher spot. Willie MacIver tosses a scoreless inning in the eighth.
