MLB news roundup
Good morning A’s fans!
The Athletics are over the .500 mark for the first time since the third game of the season after last night’s close 2-1 victory over the Rangers. Now the hard part of maintaining that winning record begins.
Today the team will be giving left-hander Jacob Lopez his first starting assignment of the season. He’s taking over for JT Ginn, who finds himself on the IL dealing with a bout of elbow pain. It’s an ominous sounding injury especially for a guy that has already endured Tommy John surgery once in career.
Lopez came over from the Tampa Bay Rays in the same trade that brought lefty Jeffrey Springs to the organization. While he may have been forgotten about at the time of the swap Lopez was more than a throw-in. So far this year in Triple-A he’s made two starts (three total appearances) and has a 2.45 ERA to show in 14 2⁄3 frames for the Aviators. He’s generally been a reliever at the major league level including this season but he has already made a couple starts in the majors back in 2023 with the Rays so tonight won’t be brand spanking new for him. This will be his first start in the Green & Gold and with Ginn looking like he’ll be on the shelf for a while Lopez has a chance to solidify a starting rotation spot with a strong outing today.
The A’s still have three more to go against the Rangers before they head out and make their next stop, which will be Florida as they’ll head to Miami to take on the Marlins. Gotta take care of business here first though. Can’t get complacent now, there’s still five more months of baseball to go!
Enjoy your Tuesday everyone!
