Back home for a critical series against a division foe
After a successful 5-2 road trip the Athletics return home to start an important weeklong home stand. They’ll kick it off tonight by welcoming the first-place Seattle Mariners to town for their first visit to Sutter Health Park of the season.
Taking the hill for the home team will be staff leader Luis Severino. The veteran right-hander enters tonight with a 3.30 ERA on the year and pitching well over his past four games. He’ll be looking to match or exceed what he did on Opening Day when he tossed six shutout frames against these guys. He didn’t get the win he deserved so hopefully his teammates can help him get that second win of the season for him in tonight’s matchup.
The lineup behind Severino for the first game of the home stand looks like this:

As you’d imagine the team has all their primary starters in there for the first game against their division rivals. The biggest change from the everyday lineup is Miguel Andujar. The right-handed batter was considered the primary left fielder before the promotion of first baseman Nick Kurtz pushed Tyler Soderstrom to left field and Andujar to the bench. The A’s want his .326 batting average in the lineup one way or another tonight and that means he’ll return to his former position of third base in place of Gio Urshela. Andujar hasn’t had much playing time at the hot corner in recent seasons but has already appeared at the position once this season for the A’s and will likely be seeing more time there going forward.
Seattle will throw right-hander Bryce Miller at the A’s tonight hoping to expand their division lead. Miller has been up and down this year, either allowing multiple runs or just one/two. He’s coming off of five shutout innings in his last start so maybe he’s due for a bit of a letdown performance tonight. He has a 3.52 ERA entering tonight’s starting assignment.

Like the A’s, Seattle has all their starters in there to start the series tonight. Severino will need to be extra careful with that top-4 in the M’s lineup. Catcher Cal Raleigh leads baseball in home runs with 12 and even though he’s slumping to start the year young center fielder Julio Rodriguez is as electric as they come and can make a big play at any moment.
They can’t tie their division rival for first place but a win tonight would draw the A’s and Mariners even in the win column. Let’s start the homestand right A’s!
