Game #69: A’s at Angels Game Thread

Looking for a bounce back win tonight

Time to play some baseball. The A’s are back at it tonight for the second game of the series against the Angels, hoping to turn their fortunes around down in Anaheim and start a winning streak.

Right-hander Mitch Spence is set to take the ball for his second starting appearance of the season. After starting 24 games for the club last season the coaching staff decided to utilize him as a relief option for the first two months of the season. He finally got a chance to get back into the starting rotation last week and he impressed in his first starting assignment of the year, going five full frames and allowing just three hits and one run against the Twins. That earned him another starting gig and he’ll hope to build on that first outing tonight against an Angels team that ranks 3rd in the league in home runs.

Shortstop Jacob Wilson was originally in tonight’s starting lineup but was a late scratch for unknown reasons. Max Schuemann, who was going to start at second base tonight, will instead slide across the bag to short and take over the position for Wilson, meaning no off day for Luis Urias, as was planned. Nick Kurtz will also return to the field for the first time since getting activated, sending Tyler Soderstrom back to left field. And the team will also see catcher Austin Wynns make his team debut. He’ll be batting eighth, ahead of center fielder Denzel Clarke.

Going for Los Angeles on the mound against the A’s will be righty Jose Soriano. It feels like he’s still a rookie but he’s now in his third season in the big leagues and second full year as a starter. He’s posted a solid 4.11 ERA this season through 13 starts. The A’s have already seen him once this season, scoring three runs in six innings against the young gun. Hopefully the team can squeeze a little more juice out of him tonight.
