Tough series about to get underway
NOTE: Tonight’s first pitch is delayed due to thunderstorms in Detroit…According to weather.com the storms should subside around 5:00 PDT. -Nico
The A’s are in Detroit tonight, ready to kick off a three-game series against the Tigers, who come into tonight’s contest with the best record in the sport at 49-30. No easy task but the A’s are ready for the challenge after a day off yesterday.
The A’s will turn to Luis Severino to get this series started. It’s been a mixed bag for the veteran right-hander in his first season in the Green & Gold. He’s sometimes looked ace-like on the mound, but then he’ll have a meltdown performance the next time out. Which Severino will show up tonight? Through his first 16 starts he’s sporting a 4.42 ERA.
The Athletics’ starting lineup for tonight’s contest shakes out like this:

Soon-to-be All Star Jacob Wilson will lead this game off for the A’s. The hot-hitting Nick Kurtz will rise to third tonight, while new catcher Austin Wynns will be hitting cleanup behind him. Perhaps the most notable point in this lineup is near the bottom, where left fielder Tyler Soderstrom will be hitting eighth tonight. He’s been in a funk for a while now after his hot start to the season. Maybe dropping him down the batting order can help get him back on track. The A’s are a different and better team when he’s hitting well. The rest of the lineup is stuffed with the regulars. All hands on deck for the pitcher they’ll be facing tonight.
The Tigers will be going with one of their big guns tonight. Right-handed ace Tarik Skubal, widely considered the best pitcher in the game right now, will be on the mound for Detroit. This is going to be one of the toughest pitchers the team will face this year. Every hit, walk, and run will be especially precious tonight.

The Tigers will be sitting Spencer Torkelson and Javier Baez tonight, as both players are slumping entering this series. Have to imagine they could see a late-game at-bat if this one is close near the end. Still gotta be careful with Riley Greene.
Let’s go A’s!
