Anthony DeSclafani vs. Pedro Avila.
And so the final series of the season begins. The San Francisco Giants can move their magic number down to one if they beat the San Diego Padres tonight. They can clinch the NL West if they beat the Padres and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But let’s just focus on this game.
The eliminated and injured Padres are doing the Giants a solid by starting pitcher Pedro Avila. A 24-year old righty, Avila has appeared in one game in his MLB career, back in 2019 (he admittedly pitched well in that game). He’s split time between AA and AAA this year, accumulating a 4.22 ERA and 1.353 FIP, with 82 strikeouts to 36 walks in 74.2 innings.
For the Giants it’s righty Anthony DeSclafani making his final start of the regular season. Disco is sporting a 3.26 ERA and 3.66 FIP, with 149 strikeouts to 42 walks in 162.2 innings.
