Logan Webb vs. Reiss Knehr.
Complain if you want to, but it’s very fitting that the San Francisco Giants season is coming down to the very final game.
Of the regular season, that is. Even with the worst result possible today, the Giants have guaranteed a minimum of two more games after the regular season. That’s if they have to play a tiebreaker against the Los Angeles Dodgers, lose, and then play a Wild Card game against the St. Louis Cardinals. They’d host both of those games.
It’s best to avoid those things, though. And while they can avoid those scenarios and win the NL West by having the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Dodgers, the simpler route is by simply beating the San Diego Padres today in the season finale.
Thankfully they have the pitching advantage. The Giants are turning to right-handed pitcher Logan Webb, who sports a 2.93 ERA and 2.78 FIP, with 150 strikeouts to 36 walks in 141.1 innings. The Giants have won 21 of Webb’s 26 starts, including 17 of the last 19.
For the Padres, it’s righty Reiss Knehr, who has made 11 appearances this year, his debut season. Knehr has struggled a bit, with a 4.85 ERA, a 5.09 FIP, and 18 strikeouts to 18 walks in 26 innings.
End the season on a high note, Giants, and take the division.
