Logan Webb vs. Luis Severino.
It’s time for Game 2 between the San Francisco Giants and the Athletics, and we’re all hoping it goes better than Friday night’s fiasco. And this should be a fun one, as it’s a battle of No. 1 starters … albeit No. 1 starters whose seasons have gone in very different directions.
For the Giants, that means perennial Cy Young candidate — and soon-to-be two-time All-Star — Logan Webb. The righty takes the mound for the 19th time, and has a 7-6 record with a 2.61 ERA, a 2.31 FIP, and 127 strikeouts to 24 walks in 113.2 innings. He leads the Majors in starts, and he leads the National League in innings pitched, FIP, and batters faced (461). His last start was one of his worst in a while, with three earned runs allowed in 6.1 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
On the other side is righty Luis Severino, who signed with the A’s over the offseason on the franchise’s largest free agency contract. But it hasn’t gone well for the two-time All-Star. In 18 starts (tied with Webb for the MLB lead), Severino has gone just 2-9 with a 5.09 ERA, a 4.31 FIP, and 71 strikeouts against 34 walks in 104.1 innings. Despite the unsightly ERA, he leads the Majors in batters faced (462), but also leads the American League in losses and earned runs (59). He’s been shellacked lately, giving up 14 runs (12 earned) in his last two starts.
The Giants made a handful of moves before the game. Most excitingly, third baseman Matt Chapman was activated off the IL. Right-handed pitcher Tristan Beck was also called up, while lefty Scott Alexander had his contract purchased from AAA Sacramento. Lefty Erik Miller is going on the 15-Day IL with an elbow sprain, while righty Mason Black was optioned and infielder Sergio Alcántara was designated for assignment.
