8/16 Gamethread: Giants vs. Mets

August 17, 2021 by McCovey Chronicles

MLB: San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks

Kevin Gausman vs. Rich Hill

The Giants welcome the New York Mets to Oracle Park tonight for the first of a three game series. The Mets come in at a bit of a disadvantage, after playing a night game against the Dodgers in New York (and getting pummeled) last night, meaning they won’t get into town until today.

Taking the mound for the Giants is their ace, Kevin Gausman. Gausman enters tonight’s game with a 2.29 ERA, 2.94 FIP, with 162 strikeouts to 43 walks in 137 innings pitched. Gausman has been strong in his last two starts, allowing only one earned run in each, combining for 13 strikeouts between the two, though he walked four in his last outing.

The Mets batters haven’t seen Gausman a ton, except for Old Friend Kevin Pillar, who has a .371 average against him in 35 at bats. They’re also missing a whole lot of their players. Francisco Lindor, Javier Baez, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard (among others) are all currently on the injured list.

So it’ll be Rich Hill that gets the start tonight for the Mets, and he’ll enter with a 4.05 ERA, with 103 strikeouts to 43 walks in 113 innings pitched. Hill is coming off of a somewhat rough start against the Washington Nationals last week in which he gave up three earned runs, walked three and only made it through three innings.

The Giants, of course, have faced Hill plenty of times during his four years with the Dodgers, with Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Wilmer Flores, Evan Longoria and Buster Posey all having averages over .300 against him in more than 10 at bats. Posey, particularly, is batting .500 against him in 20 at bats, with a home run and four RBI.
