Alex Wood vs. James Kaprielian
The Giants take on their Bay Bridge neighbors tonight, heading to Oakland to start a three game series against the Athletics.
Taking the mound for the Giants will be Alex Wood, who enters tonight’s game with a 4.14 ERA, 3.77 FIP, with 121 strikeouts to 35 walks in 115 innings pitched. The Giants have won Wood’s last five starts, despite a string of games in which he got roughed up for 4-5 runs each. His last start against the Rockies was a bit stronger, though, allowing six hits, two runs, one walk and striking out six in six and two thirds innings.
He’ll be facing off against James Kaprielian, the A’s young right hander who is in his second season in the majors. Kaprielian enters tonight’s game with a 3.33 ERA, 4.01 FIP, with 83 strikeouts to 29 walks in 83.2 innings pitched. His last start was against the Rangers, where he led the A’s to an 8-3 victory, allowing eight hits, three runs, with zero walks or strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
Neither team has seen a lot of these pitchers, but it’s worth noting that Brandon Crawford has a home run off of Kaprielian in his only at bat against him. Line up notes: Evan Longoria will be out again today, presumably available to pinch hit as he was on Wednesday.
